What is a Demat Account?
A Demat Account is an account that allows investors to hold their shares in an electronic form. A Demat Account provides a secure, easy, and convenient way of holding shares and securities. Account Types
Upstox offers two different types of trading account to suit investors/traders need:
- Upstox Basic Plan (brokerage Free equity delivery and ₹20 per trade for Equity F&O, Commodity, and Currency). The plan offers basic trading features in Equity Delivery segment through mobile and website. It doesn’t change any brokerage for trading in the Equity Delivery segment. Basic plan offers up to 20x leverage on the Cash segment.
- Upstox Priority Pack (₹0 equity delivery brokerage and flat ₹30/trade for Equity F&O, Commodity, and Currency)
Upstox Pro is the trading platform for frequent traders; who trade in Indra-day and F&O segments. This plan offers up to 25x leverage on the Cash segment. Along with the standard features offered in Upstox Basic Plan, Upstox Pro offers stock search, analyze, trade, and monitor stocks, currencies, F&O, and commodities. Upstox Pro provides advanced charting for professional traders for technical analysis. It also offers a wide range of indicators, chart types, data-rich user interface.

Proof of address
Lastly, you’ll need to submit a proof of address in India. There can be some overlap of address proof and ID proof documents. The full list includes:

Proof of bank
You’ll have to show proof of the bank account that you wish to connect with your account. If you have a canceled cheque that has your name on it then you can send it to your broker along with the account opening forms. Or, if you’re opting for the online account opening process you can upload the canceled cheque with the bank’s IFSC code to the online portal.
In a bank proof a broker needs the following from you:
- Your name
- Bank’s IFSC Code

The online account opening method
In today’s digital world, there really shouldn’t be any reason for you to be filling out physical forms when almost the entirety of your information can now be stored digitally. Fortunately, some brokers have the online processing part figured out. Customers can sign up and complete the registration process online. Offline account opening process
- Your broker will hand you an account opening form – either when you’ve visited its office or if you’re meeting one of its employees.
- You will need to fill out this form and attach a proof of identity and a proof of address.
- Once done, you’ll also be expected to sign an agreement with your broker. This document will state your responsibilities as a trader/investor, and that of your brokerage firms. Keep a copy of this document with you for future reference.
- Once your broker verifies and processes your documents, you’ll be given your account number, similar to how you receive a bank account number. This number is called the Beneficial Owner Identification Number (or BOID) or Unique Client Code (UCC) if you’re trading with Upstox.
You’ll also receive additional confidential data – such as a Login ID and key for accessing online portals and placing trades.
